FOOPA SOCIAL PROGRAMME. September 2010 to January 2011 Hinton Ampner-Watercress Line Tuesday 14th September Coach leaving from the Cathedral Bus Stop at 10.00am Hinton Ampner is a National Trust House but best known for its gardens. The elegant country house was remodelled by Ralph Dutton the 8th and last Lord of Sherbourne in 1960 after a devastating fire, the gardens were also laid by Ralph Dutton and are widely acknowledged as a masterpiece of 20th century design, mixing formal and informal planting, providing all year interest. There is a cafe to purchase lunch or you can bring your own picnic. The house is open and included in the price. If you belong to the National Trust this part of the trip is free on producing your membership card. We will be leaving the house at 14.00 hrs to go to Alresford to the Mid Hants Railway or what is affectionately known as "The Watercress Line". The heritage railway was saved from total extinction by a group of enthusiastic volunteers in 1973. They raised enough money to reopen the line as a visitors' attraction from Alresford to Ropley in 1977 and continued to raise money to lay track to join up with the South West Trains at Alton by 1985. So, sit back and let the train take the strain and enjoy the sight, sound and smell of a steam engine. Once on board and on your way you will be served with a Cream Tea which is included in the price. After a memorable trip you will board your coach back at round about 17.00 hrs to arrive home at roughly 18.15 - hopefully having had a magical time. Cost for the whole day out is £35.00 per person.
