FOOPA News Letter

A belated Happy New Year to you all. Please now renew your membership, or join the Association - just £5 for your household, which represents excellent value for money.
Those who do not already pay by standing order and wish to do so, should take up that option on the membership form, rather than having to remember to send a cheque or pay in cash each year.

We look forward to seeing you at the AGM on 24th March, which is back at our traditional venue of Cathedral House. We have vacancies on the Executive Committee. This meets on the third Wednesday of each month, apart from August, at 7.30 pm - so please volunteer your services or nominate candidates now ! The Dean will then bring us up to date on what has been done and what is planned by the Cathedral Chapter, including the Flower Festival in July. In the meantime, why not finally drive away those winter blues by signing up for some of the events in our Social Calendar? We start with the ever-popular Quiz Night, followed by a talk about life on cruise ships - both at the RNC & RAYC. Immediately after Easter we have a day trip to Highgrove - as we have finally got to the top of Prince Charles’ waiting list. Next there is a repeat of the last year’s popular day in the Close at Salisbury and in June a visit to Bletchley Park. All will undoubtedly be popular, so
look at your diary and book now !

To be called "The Greatest Show on Earth". This will be a magnificent presentation of flowers arranged in separate displays around a circus theme created by Church Flower Arrangers and Flower Clubs. Sandra Stockdale is the FOOPA representative for the proposed Festival and is looking for volunteer stewards .

Held at the Cathedral in July next year, there will also be performance art in the circus arena to be located in the Nave. Alan Titchmarsh has agreed to open the event at the Gala Night on Wednesday 22 July. Sandra is looking for volunteer stewards to assist at the Festival on a rota basis. So, if you are willing to help or know of any of your neighbours who may want to, please get in touch with Sandra by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it giving details such as Name, Address, Post Code, Phone Number, any Email address and any relevant previous experiance if you wish. These details will be forwarded to Sandra and she will be in contact.

To make our visitors feel welcome and to show them the route to follow, we shall need a team of stewards. We are looking for volunteers who can be on duty in teams on a rota basis. Whoever joins the team will have the opportunity to see the festival and feel part of an exciting and interesting event in the life of Portsmouth Cathedral. The present details, yet to be finalised are: -
• Stewards will be on duty for periods of about 2 hours between 10.00 and 19.00 from the Thursday to Saturday 23 to 25 July 2009 and 13.00 to 18.00 on Sunday 26 July.
• We expect to provide off road car parking for Stewards.
• Duties will include, making a friendly point of contact for answering questions from visitors, being able to provide guidance and assistance, especially in emergencies, as well as reporting incidents or other relevant information on security matters to the Team Leader.
• A short training session will occur before the event.
By registering now you will enable the organisers to contact you when more details are finalised and we can establish our rota, probably in early 2009.

N.B. If you are also booking for social events please send your subscription to David Baynes at the address on the BOOKING FORM below at the end of the Social Events Programme.
