Community Policing - Incident levels for Old Portsmouth 01/04/06 – 31/03/07

The following is the text of a report received from Old Portsmouth Neighbourhood Policy Team May 2007:

20 Assaults reported – a low figure considering the number of licensed premises, quite often, the offender has known the victim. This equates to less than 1 assault every 18 days, which is very low.
37 Reported incidents of criminal damage – this can range from damage to a plant pot upwards, this is a very low figure.
59 Reported incidents of theft during the year – this can range from theft of a milk bottle upwards, this is also a very low figure, especially when you consider the number of visitors during the summer months.
17 Cycles were reported as stolen during the course of the year. Cycle crime is an area that we are working hard to reduce in Portsmouth.
House burglaries are very rare in Old Portsmouth less than 1 a month reported to police. We are working to reduce this figure, with regular leaflet ‘footprint’ drops, plus advising residents when we see them.
In relation to the anti-social behaviour that Portsmouth experiences during the summer months, we have dedicated officers who are specially assigned to the area now, Wendy Robinson PCSO and Caroline Burton PC. We are looking towards a dispersal area* and also the installation of covert cameras as well to secure evidence against persistent offenders.
On a number of weekends this summer, the community surgery bus will be in Old Portsmouth to tackle anti-social behaviour, 2 PCSOs will be working together to deal with this. There is work under way in setting up a community drop–in at the Cathedral, this is subject to funding, but if agreed, it will result in an even more improved quality of service for the residents of Old Portsmouth, with real accessibility for residents.
We are looking at recruiting a Special Constable specifically for Old Portsmouth, to give increased coverage and greater visibility.
Old Portsmouth is a very safe place to live, with very low reported crime figures. The respective officers on the team are committed to improving the quality of life for the residents of Old Portsmouth.

*(This means that once dispersed from an area an offender(s) can be arrested if they return to it).
